History

Argentina was colonized by the spanish in the 1500s. after gaining independence from spain, the young replublic drew large waves of immigrants from europe. In 1881, it absorved the territory of patagonia.during the late 1960s and early1970s, a succession of military and civilian goverment ruled argentina. The countrys economic problems worsened. In 1973, peron returned from exile to be president again.huge crowds ghaterin the plaza the mayo in buenos aires, above, in support os san juan peron. Peron won the support of argentinas working classes by giving them higheer waves, more pay holydais, and other benefiets.

 About 250,000 indianans may have live on the land that  is now argentina when the first europeans arrive in the 1500s, but, 300 years later, the indian  population had greatly declined. During the spanish occupation, many indians were killed by the europeans, and many other die fron desiases brought by the settlers. some intermarried with the europeans and produced a mestizo population. Today, argentina has a small indian population compare with other south american countries only about 50,000 indians of unmixed ancestry live there.most of the have settle in isolated areas such as the andes and patagonia.`most of the immmigrants came from spain and italy, Soccer fans wave the argentina flag at a world cup match in rio de laplata stadium. soccer is argentina most popular sport, and soccer games draw thousands of fans. another favorite sport is pato. A gaucho in buenos aires shos off the traditional costume of these fiercely independent cowboys.
