This mystery is a critical aspect of our world's history after 1945.  It is sad to say, but true, that without this mystery the Roman family would not be as well remembered today.  Also, if Anna Anderson had proved to be Anastasia, the world could have been in a different situation politically.  This is not to mention the lasting impact of the Romanov's on society.  For example, they have been proclaimed holy figures in certain religions.  If they had not been murdered, the revolution in Russia may have failed.  When you go back and think, it is amazing to think how one event can alter history so much.
