History
Israel is a small country in southwestern Asia. It lies right along the side of the Mediterranean Sea. Israel was founded in 1948 as a homeland for Jews, more than 4 out of 5 of Israel’s people are Jews. Jerusalem is Israel’s capital and it’s largest city. Also, Israel makes up most of the Biblical Holy Land.
Government
Israel is a democratic republic with a parliament- cabinet form of government. It has no written constitution, instead they follow the “basic laws” that have been passed by the Knesset ( Israel’s parliament). All Israel may vote by the age 18. Voters do not cast ballots per individual candidate, rather they vote for whole parties.
Way of life
Israel has a relatively high standard of living, with income levels similar to those as such countries as Spain. Most Israeli’s wear western –style clothing, generally less formal than in western countries. Jewish dishes include chopped liver, chicken soup, gefilte fish, felafel ( small deep fried patties of ground chickpeas. Raw vegetables and fruits are among the most popular foods.
