Why Has the Population of Children Changed in China?

Over the past 20 years China’s population has darastically changed. One reason for this change is because of China’s One-child-per-family policy. This policy allows each family one child. By Chinese cultural perference for boys its leaving China with childbearing restrictions, and the customs that it is better to have a male than a female. Males inherit everything from the family. Not only that but a female marries into the family of the husband and no longer is responsibly for her left behind family. This means that there is no one to care for her parents. This may not be that big of a deal to you but it is to Chinese culture.

To make sure that a family has a male child, there are many things a female does. First there are ultrasounds that confirms the child is a male. An ultrasound is a device used to determine the sex of the fetus. If the mother has and ultrasound to determine the sex and it is a female, there are ways in which they get “rid” of the baby or infanticide. One of these ways is an Abortion.

Infant mortality rate has rapidly gone up. Girl babies being eliminated from China one a massive scale, whether it’s from neglect, abandment, infanticide or abortion. It has gone up so quickly that men are having trouble-finding women to marry. Kidnapping from neighboring countries has gone up as a result. As a form of neglect female babies are not taken to the doctor if they are sick. If a male on the other hand has the same illness he is taken to the doctor. Not only that but women are abandoning their children by dropping them off at orphanages. The most harmful of them all however is infanticide. After birth, babies are shaken to death, stepped on, and much worst through to end their lives. After they are dead they are left next to curbs or tossed into a Dumpster and taken away by municipal garbage collectors.

The ratio of boys to girls has risen dramatically in a society that boys are prized at alarming levels. The 2000 Census told us that for every 100 girls there are 118 boys. This doesn’t exclude the ones that are dead. So in actuality there may be less than that.

The one-child policy was imposed in 1979 by the government, hoping to be controlled over population. The Chinese people probably never took into consideration that 20 years from now, the population would decrease. Soon there will not even be enough women to reproduce. That will be a big problem. Now, for Chinese the biggest problem is to continue get rid of female babies and to find a wife for all the males, and inherit the belongings from the pervious father.
