Fidel Castro
was born on a sugar plantation at Mayari in Oriente Province on August
13, 1927. His father was a Spanish immigrant. He attended Catholic schools
most of his young life. For college, he attended the University of Havana
and graduated with a degree in Law. He married Mirta Diaz-Balart, but they
divorced in 1954. They had one son, Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, who eventually
became the head of Cuba’s Atomic Energy Commission in 1949.
