Castro Promised Cuba that they would never again be ruled by a dictator. Not too long after that it was clear that Castro was running a Communist dictatorship. In the beginning stages, his goverment included moderate politicians and democrats, but all of his policies b ecame radical. Castro was an unchalleged leader. He did improve living conditions and the masses followed him. He made promises or elections and they were not completed. Foreign-owned land was taken away. Many middle class people fled from Cuba after realizing that his Communist revolution was fast-coming.
Castro led thousands of Cubans to migrate in the U.S. in the 1600's. In 1984 he released 22 Americans who were in Cuban jails for different reasons. Cuban became home to repeated airplane hijackers and his government signed an anti-hijacking agreement in 1973.
In December of 1961 Cuba aligned with the Soviet Union, which was sure to help with economics, technology and military assistence until 1991, but in 1962, the Cuban Missle Crisis affected those plans. In 1979 Castro was elected chairman of the Nonaligned Nations Movement. Became of this election, he gained international prestige.
Castro demands
absolute loyalty from his Cuban people. He has been very unsuccessful with
policymaking. Cuban remains a very poor and in debt country to this day.
