Honors World History (2A, 5):  Election 2000 Project

During the last stages of the 2000 Election Season, you will be running a mock campaign for office. Using resources from home, the library, and school, you will research one of the following people, most of whom are historical figures of Unit I: Asia, Africa, or the Middle East Before 1500 AD.

  • Genghiz Khan or Kublai Khan
  • Wu Di or Liu Bang
  • Shi Huang Di
  • Mansa Musa
  • Al-Kharazmi or Ibn Sina
  • Abu Bakr/Shah Abbas
  • Asoka
  • Chandragupta Maurya
  • Muhammad
  • Buddha
  • Confucius
  • Ibn Battuta
  • Zheng He
  • George W. Bush
  • Al Gore

Just like a real campaign, you will be responsible for developing a strategy for a victory in November. All successful campaigns have the following components:

  • A clear stance on issues important to the people
  • A slogan that represents the policies of the candidate
  • A campaign brochure/poster/commercial illustrating candidate’s views, slogan, etc.
  • A successful speech delivered by the candidate to the people
  • A successful debate between the candidate and his/her opponents

You and one other person will take the role of the historical figure or modern candidate. One of you will represent the candidate in debates and speeches. The other will be responsible for printed material. Both members of the campaign team should work together to effectively create the best campaign possible.

A few reminders: You are representing the historical or modern figure. This project is to be done as if you are really that person. Therefore, personal opinions will not be shown in the debates, speeches, brochures, or slogans. There will be an additional assignment which will allow for your personal viewpoints.

You will have some class time to work on this project, but the majority of an excellent project will come from collaborative work outside of the school day. Utilize all available resources at the school and county libraries, the textbooks, and the Internet. Good starting points are the links page, especially the county social studies website.

The following is a rough timeline for you to plan the completion of the project.  The first assignment collected/assessed will be the campaign poster.  All grades for the project will go on the first quarter grades.

  • Candidate/Partner Assignments 10/16
  • Research notes on candidate 10/24
  • Major issues picked and candidates’ viewpoints expressed 10/24
  • Slogan of candidate developed 10/24
  • Campaign Speeches Written (3 minutes) 10/26
  • Campaign Poster/Brochure for Candidate (you may also create a commercial if you have the equipment available to you at home) 10/30
  • Campaign Speeches Given 10/30-31
  • Debates between sets of 4 candidates (you will deliver a 1-minute version of your campaign speech, then debate for ten minutes with opponents) 11/1-11/2
  • Personal opinion paper about your candidate, other candidates, and the election in general (2 pages) 11/6, 8
  • Election Day for Candidates/Mock Election with Howard County 11/6
